Asthma is not just a human disease and can also affect animals, including dogs and Cats. When your pet suffers an Asthma attack, it is due to Inflammation and spasm of the airways as well as excessive production of mucus. This leads to difficulty in breathing.

How will I know if my pet has Asthma?

During an episode of Asthma you may notice your pet’s breathing is shallow, rapid and labored. You may also notice that your cat or dog has to put a lot of effort into inhaling and exhaling and you may see the abdomen moving in and out quite dramatically.

In less severe cases, the only symptom of Asthma can be a chronic cough. Especially in Cats, this is often confused with Hairballs. Some pets Lose Weight and become lethargic. However, most pets with Asthma seem quite normal in between attacks.

To diagnose Asthma, a chest X-ray and possibly other tests to rule out other respiratory conditions.

What causes Asthma?

Triggers for Asthma in pets may include tobacco smoke, pollution, dust from litter trays, Stress and cold air. Just like humans, pets may also be sensitive to certain foods, as well as food additives like preservatives and colorants.

Paris, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) French Health Minister Roselyn Bachelot raised the bird flue alert from moderate to high on July 5, when three swans died from the H5N1 strain in Mosela, northwest France. Consider that is the "found" birds. How many died in the woodlands that were not found.

Health minister Bachelot said although France is not threatened with a pandemic "it needs to be alert since the flu epidemic that spread after WWI, also known as Spanish influenza, was linked to birds."  At present, the strain has not mutated; the fear is it will.

Also in this weeks news in the livestock sub-sector, Nigerian poultry farmers were faced with a resurgence of the Avian Influenza (bird flue) H5N1 viral strain particularly in Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Bauchi and Lagos states.

Another third world Health Ministry closed down the bird markets this past Sunday. Tests confirmed 20 cases of the disease in falcons, chickens and turkeys. They banned all imports and exports of birds and intensified fumigation of poultry farms and random testing of birds.

Bird flu has killed at least 167 people worldwide since it broke out in 2003. The theory is that when the saliva of infected bird dries and spreads in air, other birds which inhale the virus will also get infected, he noted. Infected birds show symptoms of the disease within three to five days and it can spread to humans.

A prison based dog adoption program in Kansas is a astounding success. It has reduced inmate violence and depression has decreased. Under the program, about 1,200 dogs have been adopted.

100 prisoners train the dogs daily. The Safe Harbor Prison Dog Program brings abandoned animals to the prisoners who in turn train the dogs. There are similar programs in existence with other prisons.
